Then once I have something that sounds decent I play around with the octaves of the top or bottom notes of the chords(I think the term for this is an "inverted chord"?). Then I drag and drop chords from there into the progression and play around with what sounds good. Then I write out to the side all 7 chords that are in the scale of a minor. Then I make the progression in the key of that chord. What helps me is I start out with one chord that sounds nice.
